Bluz Brothers BBQ

Posted by ashburnreviews on October 27, 2008

Bluz Brothers BBQ and Grill
43150 Broadlands Center Plaza, Suite 194
Broadlands, Virginia
(703) 858-9499

Location: Where Del Ray used to be is now Bluz Brothers BBQ.

I wanted to love this place. I love BBQ. But ugh what a yucky experience we had. They opened a few weeks back and we were there that opening week.

I asked our waitress how she thought the food at Bluz Brother’s was as compared to Carolina Brothers, and she said something like, “We have all be going to Carolina Brothers for years because it is here and local. But this food is MUCH better.” As I’m sure most of you know, Carolina Brothers hasn’t been around for years. Or at least they haven’t been in that building for years – the old Partlow’s building that recently took over. Our waitress – feeding us that line – should have been our clue that this new BBQ place was less then good.

And frankly everything our waitress said was annoying. As usual, I asked her my standard questions – what is good what does she like, etc. And she just went on and on and on how everything was WONDERFUL. “Oh it is all so great.” “Real Quality!” Ugh… I was trying hard not to let her over optimism cloud my judgment.

The menu looked great. So remaining as positive as possible – we ordered a ton of food to try it all.

The two biggest disappointments were the ribs and the banana pudding.

I’ll start with the ribs because that was what we were most looking forward to… The ribs came out NOT attached to each other. They were cut separately, and had grill marks that didn’t match. They were obviously not from the same rack. It was as if the cooks had a big bucket of frozen single ribs and just threw on – how ever many is in a rack – on a plate. But putting the mystery origins of the ribs aside, they weren’t good it texture or taste. And I wouldn’t be surprised if all that was on them was KC Master Piece or some similar grocery store brand with some single additional spice on them.

The banana pudding was the most disgusting part of the meal. It had a top thick (one inch maybe) rubbery yellow layer on the middle of it. I asked her what the layer was… she said “pudding”. What? Where I come from lady, my pudding doesn’t look like this. Under the think coating was a watery and globby inconstant mess of more “pudding”. to compliment this disgusting dessert were brown bananas at the bottom the dish that looked like they were sitting in pudding for at least 3 or 4 days. It was all topped off by Necco wafers.

Other food products we had that night were the corn bread (just okay – seemed stale though), hush puppies (not corn-like enough I think), sweet potato fries (served cold) and mac and cheese (that was watery and had little chunks of tomatoes in it).

What I CAN say positively about Bluz Brothers is that it looked nice and clean inside. They had done a nice job making over the look of the inside.

I have seen mixed resturant reviews online of this place… so I don’t get it. Some reviews rave. Others don’t like it. I wonder if the problem is that they are inconsistent or they are experiencing opening pains? I don’t want to completely write off this place because some seem to like it and it does look like they put some effort into making it look nice… but I don’t see myself rushing back anytime soon either.

The Village Grill

Posted by ashburnreviews on August 29, 2008

Update 8/29/08: I have to hand it to the owner of Village Grill. He seems to be trying to make VG more inviting. Every evening that I drive home, I see new bright hand-made signs up in front of VG advertising Karaoke Night or Texas Hold ‘Em or some other themed night. Although the signs haven’t made me want to return yet, my interest in VG (or at least the signs) is there.

The Village Grill

Ashburn, VA 20147

Web Site: villgrill.com

Location: In the same shopping center as the ice rink and the new Anita’s – where Beef ‘O’ Brady’s was.

I didn’t want this blog to focus on negative reviews. I’m afraid though, I have to give another one.

The Village Grill has opened up – where Beef ‘O’ Brady’s was.

My husband and I went there opening night. The place had been open 4 hours, our waiter told us. The wait staff I guess was friendly – it seemed to be a mix of young surfer guys in blue shirts and puka seashell necklaces. One odd thing was our waiter asked if we wanted any appetizers before we had a menu… as if on opening night we would know what appetizers we wanted.

As for decor, It is hard to tell also what this place is trying to be. A sports bar? A family restaurant? A high quality dining experience? It was none of these things.

There are TVs all over and the old BOB furniture, so it sort of feels like a sports bar. Though for a sports bar, the TVs are kind of old; No flat screens. Just big giant boxes hanging over our heads.

As for menu… It is hard to tell what the owner was going for food wise. It sort of felt like their opinion of us as eaters was low. Like they expected if they served anything we would eat anything… like we had no other choices. While there is a bunch on the menu (which you can look at online by the way), there is nothing that you couldn’t get anywhere else. There seemed to be no theme. Just here are things easy for us to cook. Now eat it and be quiet.

(Also, there were no wings or chicken fingers which doesn’t need to be at all restaurants obviously but if they are trying to be a sports bar, it seems like they would be there. That being said I’m not sure if they had those things why anyone would pick that place over Buffalo wing Factory or Glory Days.)

We looked through the menu and eventually I settled on the Jumbo Cheese Ravioli (which was no better then the “fresh” pasta you get at market with super market canned sauce). My husband had the crisp cod and chips (which was not crisp and lacked flavor). Both entrees were bland and boring.

We will not return. I’m just not sure what this place had to offer that I couldn’t make myself at home.

I should note here that the food wasn’t “BAD”; i.e. it didn’t make us ill or didn’t have a bad flavor. It just had no flavor. Boring boring boring. So even though I am giving it a 1 star (because yes I completely believe that you shouldn’t bother eating there), I would rank it above the other 1 stars on this site like Vapiano or Fosters Grille.

Mimi’s Cafe (Sterling) for DINNER

Posted by ashburnreviews on June 2, 2008

Mimi’s Cafe (Sterling) – Dinner
21015 Dulles Town Center
Sterling, VA 20166
(571) 434-0162

Web Site: mimiscafe.com

Location: Next to the mall, behind the Chuckie Cheese. Take a left on Atlantic Blvd from Nokes Blvd, and it is right there.

While their breakfast has been nothing but good – so good that I have kept a separate restaurant review for their breakfast – their dinners (and we have tried about 3 there) have been less then desirable. We have had a French dip sandwich, the chicken pot pie, chicken fried steak and a few other items.. and they were really just blah.

While the atmosphere of Mimi’s is still pretty cute, the quality of the dinner food – in my humble opinion – is exceeded by IHOP. (And though I like IHOP, that is nothing to be proud of.)

If you haven’t eaten at Mimi’s, try their breakfasts. Skip the dinners. Good news… most of the breakfasts are served till 4:00 everyday.

Vapiano

Posted by ashburnreviews on December 26, 2007

Vapiano Dulles Town Center
21100 Dulles Town Circle
Dulles,VA 20166
703-574-4740

Web Site: vapianointernational.com

Location: In Dulles Town Center Mall, to the left of the main entrance.

My husband and I were at the mall the other night. A new restaurant has opened up there, Vapiano, so we decided to try it. Think of the worst Italian restaurant that you have ever been to and combine that with your typical school cafeteria and local cheesy night club.

Vapiano’s atmosphere is “modern” which means there is nothing comfy about the place. The high bench that I was sitting on had no padding. The stools (which I did not sit on but my husband did) had no backs.

As you walk into Vapiano, you are handed a credit card. You then go station to station and get pasta, salad or pizza. At the stations, the people that cook your food swipe your card. Stations require that you wait at the stations until the order(s) are finished and presented to you. After eating your meal at a cold uncomfortable table, you leave. But first you stop by the front desk and give them your card and are charged with what is on the card.

One of the most troubling things is that written on each card is a note about how if you loose your card, the value of the cards are $100 each and you will be charge the FULL value. We noticed this as we were waiting to get our food. With meals that are in the $10 range, this seems a bit extreme to me.

We walked up to the pasta station because it was the first most apparent one. I got Caprese, I think, tomato sauce, mozzarella, tomatoes and basil over pasta. My husband got the Bolognese sauce on his pasta. The guy that cooked our meals wasn’t too chatty and didn’t ask us if we wanted drinks or dessert. He handed us our bowls and some bread and swiped out card. We brought our charged card and food to the table a bit confused. What do we do now?!

I should also note that the guy who cooked our food broke one of my main rules. I asked him what his favorite thing on the menu was and he told me the MOST expensive thing they had. Some type of lobster pasta. I don’t like that.

After we put our food down, I went back up to the stations and ask for a drink. As it was the closest and I had no idea where the drinks were, I went to the pizza one. The woman at the station didn’t understand English, so we couldn’t understand each other. It was horribly frustrating. Eventually my husband had water and I had soda. I believe I was charged the outrageous price of $2.25 for the Coke!

The music at Vapiano sounded like a loud beat over and over again and nothing else. Like we were at a dance club. Upon closer inspection, it appeared that they were playing a good variety of music just at the wrong levels. Rihanna. Peter Gabriel. Etc.

The food was mediocre at best. Cheap quality ingredients. The pasta was underdone. The sauces were bland. And after watching “our chef” make our meals in front of us, it made me realize just how quickly we could have made the same stuff at home – but instead meals that actually tasted good.

Had their been a wait staff or a manager came over to say hello, I may have rated this a bit better – because then at least they would have been trying. But even though there were lots of important people milling about in black, no one stopped by.

Had their food been better, I would have rated it higher too. Because the price wasn’t bad. But bleh, it just wasn’t worth what we paid. Cheap ingredients doesn’t usely make a good product.

The whole experience was cold and weird. I hope to never return there again. For Italian, we would have been much better off going to Bertucci’s, Olive Garden, Macaroni Grill, eating at home, Sal’s, Ashburn Cafe, anything.

If you eat here, you are going to have an okay meal. And if you have something delivered, it will be delivered very quickly.

But what I have found – unfortunately – is that this restaurant just isn’t that good. The food is just okay. Even if I have had extra food when I was done eating, I have never wanted to take it home for leftovers.

That being said, in my opinion, there are worse 1 star restaurants listed here.
