The Cajun Experience
14 Loudoun Street SE
Leesburg, VA 20175

Web Site: cajunexperience.biz

Location: The Cajun Experience is run out of a small white house It is located to the right of Market Station’s Tuscarora Mill, just before King street past the garage. We had no trouble parking just outside the restaurant on the street.

I’m happy to say that Leesburg has blessed us with a new interesting restaurant, The Cajun Experience.

I learned about this new restaurant from fellow food review blogger, Every Restaurant in Leesburg. And I’m so glad I did. What a fun new place.

I had the crawfish etouffee while my husband ate the red beans and rice. Both entrees were very tastey.

The resturant offered a Chef’s Special which was the etouffee with tilapia on it. I think this would have been a great dish to try had I been more hungry. Maybe next time. I’d also like to try the shrimp maque choux and the chicken and sausage gumbo. Yum. All such flavorful goodies.

My favorite part of the meal was the dessert. My husband and I shared an order of the beignets (yummy fritter like creations with powdered sugar on them) and each of us had a cup of the delicious chicory coffee. I could have drank that coffee all day long. (Even this morning as I’m drinking my regular coffee, I’m dreaming about it. And the beignets. Yum. Maybe when they are open long enough the CE will start offering brunch. What a treat that would be!)

I was pleased to see that the restaurant also offered banana pudding – one of my favorite things – so next time we’ll need to try that too.

Ledo’s Pizza Ashburn

Ledo’s Pizza
42920 Piccadilly Plaza
Ashburn, Virginia 20147
703-723-3031

Location: Near the Piccadilly Plaza Bloom, in that “hidden” shopping center off of Belmont Ridge Road, near route 7.

Web Site: ledopizza.com

I am glad to tell to you that a new Ledo’s has opened up right here in Ashburn. (As you know I’m sure, the next closest is near the movie theater in Sterling.)

My husband and I ate there opening night after an invite came to me as a comment from Kara. Thanks!

For this trial run, my husband and I ordered the friend ravioli appetizer (yum), side salads (which were good – I particularly liked the house dressing which I had on mine), and a regular cheese pizza. The pizza was tasty as Ledo’s pizza always is. The crust was flaky. The sauce was good. I’d say our only mini-issue was that the pieces of pizza seemed to be cut very small (like 2 inch squares) but I’m guessing that since this was their first night they are just getting the hang of the right size to cut the pizza. But overall we had a good visit there and we will return.

Finnegan’s Bar & Grill

Posted by ashburnreviews on March 18, 2009

Finnegan’s Bar & Grill
44050 Ashburn Village Blvd, Unit 199
Ashburn, VA 20147
Phone: (703) 723-5885

Location: In the Ashburn Village Shopping Center. In the place that was Kirkpatrick’s.

Web Site: finnegansbar.com

Blog: finnegansirishpub.wordpress.com

On Monday, my husband and I tried Finnegan’s. What a pleasant experience. The food was significantly improved over what Kirkpatrick’s used to pass off as food.

We sampled a bunch of different items from the menu including mac and cheese, hamburger sliders, chicken pot pie, chicken wings and chocolate cake.

The drumstick wings were a bit dry but at an acceptable level I think. Our wings had BBQ sauce on them. The BBQ was most likely from a bottle, but we liked the flavor. They offered other wing flavors as well including Thai. I’d like to try the Thai flavor – but I’m guessing that is one that my husband wont like. Finnegan’s also served 8 wings – instead of 6 – which we appreciated.

The mac and cheese was good. The pasta was cork screw shaped and the cheese sauce was tasty. And for those of you with kids, you’ll be happy to know, that we noticed that at a nearby table that they serve a kid’s version of mac and cheese that looks like it comes right out of the Kraft box and is served with fries.

The sliders, came with either hamburgers, chicken or crab. We tried the mini-hamburgers. They were served on tasty hard rolls, and tasted like they were hand packed. I was pleasantly surprised with them and I hope to try the burgers next time. I think they will be good. The sliders were also served with fries – which were hot, crispy and slightly seasoned. We were pleased with the fries as it was apparent that they had recently been prepared.

My husband got the Chicken Pot Pie and he really enjoyed it. I tried a bite and I liked it as well. At the end of the meal, there was another clean plate by my husband, which I always take as a good sign.

For dessert we split chocolate cake and each had a coffee. The coffees were on the strong side but they were good. We both finished ours.

The chocolate cake had an Irish Cream filling it in – which I really enjoyed but my husband did not. He just don’t like Irish Cream I think.

To add to our experience, our waitress was very good. She was friendly and personable, and when she talked to us she bent down to our level and looked at us in the eyes.

As you may have noticed from the above text, we ate dinner at Finnegan’s. We did not drink there. So I cannot account for how good the bar is or is not. I didn’t ask if they served all the right Irish beers – because again we weren’t drinking.

As for the Irish food – as I also said above – we stuck to pretty classic bar food – so I cannot account for how good or not the Irish classics are like the Beef and Guinness Stew or the Bangers and Mash is. But what I can tell you is that for bar food, this stuff is pretty good.

And although there is still a slight smokey smell, Finnegan’s is thankfully non-smoking (hooray!). The new owner’s staff must have cleaned the heck out of the place, because it smells much better then KP’s ever did.

Finnegan’s is just what Ashburn has needed. An easy-going locally-owned restaurant with quality food and good service. I hope that it succeeds.

Paris Prestige

Posted by ashburnreviews on March 16, 2009

stars-3

Paris Prestige
20630 Ashburn Rd
Ashburn, VA 20147
(703) 723-1267

Location: In Old Ashburn, where Jerry’s Sub Shop (and then Spice Town) used to be located. In the 7-11 strip mall, just before the firehouse and Partlows.

By the enthusiastic recommendation of an Ashburn Reviews visitor (thank you Ann!), I learned about this new French restaurant.

I am glad to say though, that my husband and I tried eating at Paris Prestige last week. I am torn on the rating of my review because while I loved some parts of our dinning experience, others I did not love.

Lets start with the good – the great really. The food was amazing. Easily PP gets my rating of 4 stars for their food – which I should note was a very pleasant surprise because I truly love to highlight new and good restaurants on this site.

My husband and I split a salad. The salad was fresh and served with a sweet vinaigrette dressing. Four complimentary garlic bread toasts were served with the salad. Our waiter told us that the bread was baked in the restaurant.

For entrees, upon the recommendation of the waiter, my husband tried the fillet, and I ordered the salmon.

The salmon was easily the best fish that I have had in the last 9 months or so. It was cooked perfect and had a great crispy skin on it. Alone the salmon would have been great, but to make it better, it was served sitting in a creamy sauce that had a lot of good flavor.

My husband enjoyed his fillet. He nearly licked his plate clean. I tried a bite and also really enjoyed it. The fillet was tender and juicy. My husband was able to cut it with a butter knife.

The two desserts we ordered to share were pass-out good. I would be tempted to return to Paris Prestige and order a whole table full of their desserts. I would like to try them all.

The first dessert a the semi-frozen chocolate moose bar sitting in a white cream sauce. It had an intense dark chocolate flavor. We loved it.

The other dessert was their special for the day – it was a small round cake with whipped cream and decorated fruit (strawberries, kiwi and a peach slice). Biting into that cake was just heavenly. It made me realize what all of those other places that try and serve little round fruit cakes (and charge a fortune for them) are trying to make. Just, yum. This cake was delicate and sweet. Charming is probably the best word for it.

Our waiter told us that PP makes all their desserts from scratch in the restaurant. I believe it. I hope that they can keep up that type of quality.

The coffee was french roast made with a french press. the coffee didn’t have a lot of body to it – but I enjoyed it a lot. It was just my kind of coffee, warm and tasty. I think it could have been a hair stronger for my husband.

Our waiter was excellent. We was friendly and warm and welcoming. There is truly a great difference between a good professional experienced wait staff and a young teenage wait staff.

Like I said above, the food rating of Paris Prestige is a 4, but it is the atmosphere of the place that knocked this rating down to a 3 for me.

To begin with the restaurant is located on the end of a mostly empty strip mall – the last shop on the right. And the way to identify Paris Prestige from the parking lot is by spotting a home made sign which features red letters hand cut and glued to a florescent green sign. Although I was able to see the sign clearly, it had a bit of an amateurish vibe to me. It looked like a sign that some one would make for a junior high school science fair. I’m hoping that sign is there only until the really nice on they ordered comes in. Maybe a nice window decal would be a good replacement?

photo I could ignore the location and the florescent sign – if inside the restaurant looked charming and sweet. But inside sadly – it’s history is not hidden. Except for some pretty yellow pendent lights, Paris Prestige look like a Jerry’s.

The most notable Jerry’s feature is a purple neon bar of light that circles the restaurant ceiling. The neon is probably the worst feature of the look of the restaurant. It just gives me the shivers when I think about such lovely food being served under a harsh purple light.

Also, less offending but still odd is that one dinning room wall and the hallway walls are covered with mirrors fake plastic stone. Again these are left over Jerry’s features.

The wall in front of the kitchen is one ginormous stainless steal monster of a wall.

The other two wall are covered with windows. The windows in my opinion should have curtains on them but instead are covered with cheap horizontal blinds.

The carpet is old, dark and industrial.

And on the tables – and this is a shame because they could have done this part right pretty easily – when they could have used lovely table cloths and cloth napkins, instead they use tan shelf-liner place mats and paper napkins.

I don’t want to nit pick about it. I don’t want to be the sort of person that needs my restaurant of choice to look perfect. But it is just for a meal that cost us over $65, I want my restaurant to look more upscale then Paris Prestige did. They have such great food and it isn’t being highlighted by the decor.

Here is what I think they need to do. Get rid of the neon first and foremost. If they need to add more lights in place of the neon, do so. Remove the mirrors and “stone”. And then paint the walls a nice red or golden or mushroom and put up a few French photos or posters and maybe some wall sconces. Replace the blinds on the window with curtains. They could either be cafe curtains (covering just the bottom half of the window) or big drape-like curtains. Swap out the paper napkins and shelf liner place mates for cloth napkins. Use either cloth place mats or a cloth table cloth. Swap out the carpet with a flooring that looks more welcoming. But without question – start with getting rid of the neon.

It is my great hope that Paris Prestige will work out their decor issues, and keep the quality of their food and wait staff high. This is just the kind of restaurant we need here. I’m keeping my fingers crossed for them.

Wine Kitchen

Posted by ashburnreviews on March 3, 2009

The Wine Kitchen
7 S. King St.
Leesburg, VA 20175
(703) 777 – WINE (9463)

Web Site: thewinekitchen.com

A fun new restaurant opened up at the end of last year in Leesburg. The Wine Kitchen is a small but nicely decorate restaurant that serves wine and tapas-style food. By tapas-style, I mean that instead of ordering one large plate of food person, you order lots of little plates of mini-appetizer foods.

The prices are pretty reasonable ($6 to $12 each) considering that the quality of the food is very good, but the cost of the small dishes can quickly add up. Trying a number of different dishes means that the total of your meal can easily add up to $100 for two. And that is without wine!

Not counting the bar, there are probably no more then 30 seats in the restaurant. And 10 of those are at a shared table. This means that unless you get to the WK early – the wait can be long.

The menu – which you can view on their web site – reads like fancy food but actually I think it is quite casual and that there is plenty of foods on their for picky eaters.

My husband and I tried eating at the Wine Kitchen this weekend, and we were quite pleased. We showed up early and we were able to be seated at a table right away. But I should also note that as the night went on, the place really filled up and it was a bit troubling for us to be invaded by a large number of people closely standing around up waiting for a table. It was very crowded.

Of the items that we tried, the Mac N’ Cheese and the Gnocchi were my favorites. The Gnocchi was not just boiled (or steamed – I’m not sure what the first step is) but it was also was pan fried so that the outside has an added crisp. Yum. It had great flavor. The Mac N’ Cheese was warm and cheesy and served in a small square warm pan.

My husband liked the Croque Monsieur Sandwich – which was a hot ham and cheese sandwich. I think he also liked the Pork Belly Ceaser salad and (like me) liked the Gnocchi and Mac N’ Cheese.

For me, the Chicken and Waffles was the weak link of the meal. Their version of this southern dish was served with quail and cornmeal-herb waffles with a bacon caramel syrup. I did love the quail. I had never had quail before. It would say that it seemed most like duck – with a slight crispy skin. It was very flavorful. But the waffles – in my opinion – might as well been Eggos. They did not impress me. And the syrup was very sweet too.

But overall, what a great experience my husband and I had eating there. I love when a new restaurant opens with such a fun a unique concept. I really liked the decor too. It was fancy and yet at the same time understated. And the waitress was great too – very friendly. I’m excited to the Wine Kitchen again soon and try other foods on the menu. And maybe for next time, we can find a time of the week to eat there where the WK is not so crowded. Maybe an early dinner during the week?

Johnny Rockets

Johnny Rockets
22855 Brambleton Plaza
Brambleton, VA 20148
703-327-9255

Location: Brambleton – just near the movie theater, the Brambleton Blue Ridge and Edibles Incredible.

Web Site: johnnyrockets.com

The wait has been too long, but I’m happy to say – drum roll please – that a new restaurant has opened up. I miss the days when they were opening up all the time! The Johnny Rockets in Brambleton opened up last Wednesday. After teasing us with “coming soon” signs for so long, here they are!

For me, one of the most surprising things about Johnny Rockets is that the place isn’t that big. Although there is some counter seating too, there are only about 10 tables.

The restaurant is set up to look like an old soda fountain. And the waiters and waitresses were little soda jerk outfits. And occasionally if the right song comes on, some of the wait staff break out into a choreographed dance. The whole look of the place is very cute.

Like Silver Dinner, each table is equipped with a jukebox – where for a nickle you can pick our your favorite song for the whole restaurant to listen to. For 35 cents, we were entertained for our entire visit. Of course your picked songs are competing against other tables’ picked songs – but with such a small place, you aren’t waiting long to hear your songs.

Unfortunately, the Johnny Rockets burgers – which are supposed to be the star of the show there, lacked seasonings. I would put a Red Robin burger, as well as a 5 Guys burger, and maybe even a Wendy’s burger, above the JR burger. But I should point out that without question I have had worse birgers – and that with all the toppings, the burgers weren’t bad. Johnny Rockets also did toast the bun though which I liked a lot. Like I said though – the biggest issue with the burger for me was that it just lacked flavor. Even adding ketchup and salt and paper to it didn’t seem to help. (I found myself wondering is the issue that their burgers aren’t 100% beef? I just didn’t see that written anywhere. I was just wondering if that is why they didn’t have that much taste to them.) My husband even joked that we should bring in a bottle of the Red Robin seasoning and put that on the burgers.

The fries that came with the burgers were okay. I think they could have been cooked a bit longer.

The shakes – or at least the shake that we tried – chocolate – was excellent. Yummy. I would like to try strawberry next time.

The waters that they served us were nice and cold – although they didn’t have any ice in them.

We ordered “Rocket Wings” too – which were fried breaded wings with a buffalo sauce. They were tasty – they had a lot of flavor to them.

The wait staff can use some schooling on being wait staff (i.e. when to stop by and how to carry things) and also the menu – but that is understandable since the place is so new.

A funny example – the menu said that the wings came with their choice of sauce. One of the sauces was a “traditional” sauce. I asked our waitress, “What was a Traditional Sauce?”

And she said, “Well the Traditional Sauce is like a Traditional Sauce.”

Our waitress offered to ask her manager when I asked for more clarification. When she came back, she said, “My manager said it is like a Rocket Sauce.”

What!? But even with those useful description, we got the wings anyhow. As it turns out – a Traditional Sauce which is like a Traditional Sauce which is a like a Rocket Sauce – is really just a Buffalo Wing Sauce, and I am glad to say that it was pretty good. As my husband pointed out, we are probably way higher in our wing-eating career then our waitress is – so maybe the issue was that she just didn’t know her wing sauce names. But that being said – our waitress was very friendly – and she will get better. It will just take practice and time.

We had a fun evening at Johnny Rockets and we will surely return.

Not Your Average Joe’s

Posted by ashburnreviews on January 26, 2009

stars-3

Update 01/26/09: I’ve been going to Joe’s for about a year and a half now, and although I usually enjoy it, some times the food is lacking. I’m sorry to do it but I am dropping Joe’s rating to a 3. It just isn’t good every time – it is like they have given up. If you are a reader of this blog then you’ll know 3 is still pretty good… it just isn’t a favorite for me any more.

The side dishes are their biggest fail in my opinion. Desserts also aren’t as fun as they used to be.

—————

Edit 1/23/2008: I’m sad to say that they no longer carry the yummy yummy chocolate moose cake. :( I asked this last time that we were there.

—————

Not Your Average Joe’s
19307 Promenade Drive
Lansdowne Town Center
Leesburg, VA 20176
Phone: (571) 333-5637

Location: Off of route 7, after Ashburn but before Leesburg. In that shopping center with the 3 (sometimes 4) fountains that you can see off of route 7.

Wow I cannot say enough about this place. I really love it.

At the start of the meal they server a bread and dipping oil that is a must have.

For dessert I love love love the chocolate cake with the chocolate moose (with little heath bars broken up in it).

In between the bread and the chocolate, the meals are very good. The beef tips are one of my favorites with green beans and mashed potatoes. I had a mustard crusted chicken there the other day that was tasty and light.

We have tried their sangria and it is very good.

There is some outside seating which I really enjoy because the shopping center is a pretty one.

When you are down with your meal at Joe’s, you can walk over to the fountain that is near by and watch the kids run in and out of it.

The staff is very friendly. We never had a real issue with them. There was a pasta dish that my boyfriend ordered without mushroom and they brought it to him with. When we told the waiter he corrected it and gave us that entree free as well as free dessert.

Good coffee too.

Carolina Brothers Pit Barbeque

Posted by ashburnreviews on January 14, 2009

readerschoicestartof20091 Note 1/14/09: We have added this restaurant to our regular rotation. It is always an awesome meal. The people that work here are friendly. And the best news is that they have mac and cheese now too as a side choice. Yum.

————

Carolina Brothers Pit Barbeque
20702 Ashburn Road
Ashburn, Virginia 20147
703-729-7070

Location: You’ll find CBPB in the old Partlow’s General Store in Old Ashburn (near the trail).

Web Site: carolinabrothers.com

The old Partlows store has been replaced by Carolina Brothers Pit Barbeque, a bbq joint serving simple delicious smoked bbq.

My husband, a friend of mine, and myself, went to try out this new stop last night. What a charming surprise – good BBQ right here in Ashburn.

To begin our meal, we were greeted with yummy smells coming from the smokers outside.

Within the restaurant – which used to be an old store – the place looks old but it is clean. And there are a bunch of tables, with room to grow if they need to. Nothing is real cramped. And at this stage of their restaurant growth, it just feels like you are eating at a restaurant that has been there for many years. It is really no frills eating. But that is part of its charm.

The menu is small (chicken, pork, beef, ribs, hot dogs, with beans, potato salad and coleslaw as sides). Which means no mac and cheese. No collard greens. No mashed potatoes. No fryer – so no hush puppies or fries. Getting over the lack of options was a little hard – but I am happy to report that everything they do serve, they serve well.

Their barbecue is Carolina-style – which takes a bit of getting used to if you haven’t had it before. The meat is slow cooked for a long time at a low temperature, and when it is ready it is pulled from the bone and cut up into chunks. If done right, it is moist and juicy – thankfully for us Ashburnites, Carolina does it right. Their BBQ is served with a spicy clear vinegar sauce. The sauce doesn’t flavor the meat, as much as just wet it. Don’t expect to find a bottle of bbq sauce here. Don’t worry though, you won’t need it.

All three of us went for the pork bbq sandwich platters. For my 2 sides, I had potato salad and cole slaw. My husband and my friend both had baked beans and cole slaw. We loved our sandwiches and sides.

And if I recall, the price we very reasonable too. the 3 of us ate, with 3 drinks, for just about $25. It is hard to beat that. Particularly for dinner.

We’ll probably add Carolina Brothers to our regular rotation. It was that good. And for a casual non-stress meal, this is a good option.

Anita’s – Breakfast

Posted by ashburnreviews on January 13, 2009

Anita’s
44305 Ice Rink Plaza
Ashburn, VA 20147

Web Site: anitascorp.com

Location: In front of the ice rink. Take Route 28 North to Route 625 (Waxpool Rd) west. At the 5th traffic light, go straight onto Farmwell Rd and take the next right at Ice Rink Plaza.

Always seeking a good breakfast place, I have tried recently and enjoyed Anita’s for breakfast.

The Old Town Special is what I have been getting – I’ve eaten their breakfast now 3 or 4 times. The special includes marinated pork, home fried, eggs, and beans. Of course, not being one to like beans, I get them to hold those. The whole thing is topped with their green chili (which is very flavorful) and served with two tortillas.

A lunch favorite of mine at Anita’s is their sopaipillas. As it turns out, it is great for breakfast too – along with a cup of coffee.

Outback Steakhouse

Outback Steakhouse
46300 Potomac Run Pl. #150
Sterling VA 20164
(703) 406-3377

Location: Sterling – Cascades

Maybe twice a year, I eat at Outback Steakhouse. The food is generally good and the staff is friendly. My biggest issue with it tends to be the wait to be seated. Although the wait is not as bad as Sweet Water, sometimes I have wait up to an hour to be seated. I hate that.

But every once in awhile my husband or I crave it, and there we are at Outback again.

This last week, we went to Outback and had a really good visit so I thought I would share. It was a week night and there was no wait. We were seated immediately in a nice big booth.

I had the chopped steak (yes that is basically a hamburger) – hold the mushrooms – with potatoes and gravy. It was tasty. I also got a salad – their chopped salad – which was also good. I had them hold the dressing on the side – which was a smart call as I had had this salad before and wasn’t crazy about all the dressing that was on it – but I am please to say that the salad was much better this time with limited dressing on it.

My husband had the steak – although I’m flaking on which one. It was cooked just to his liking and he finished his plate. He also has a Caesar salad which he enjoyed.

What I was most pleased with on this trip was by the visit from the manager to our table. We had also ordered a side of shrimp that wasn’t good – it had a funny texture. The manager came by just as my husband and I were talking about it. The manager talked to us about the shrimp and offered to bring us a new fresh plate out. Soon the new plate arrived, and I tried this new shrimp as he waited at our table. Unfortunately the new shrimp wasn’t good either – it had the same issue. The best way that I can explain it is that the shrimp tasted like it had been thawed and then re frozen and then cooked. I was having trouble explaining it and I asked the manager if he could try and tell me his opinion. He said sure and picked up a shrimp and tried it. I cannot tell you how great my husband and I thought this gesture was. I have never seen (or heard of) a manager or a server anywhere that will try something that the customer thinks is bad.

Anyhow, the manager tried the tainted shrimp and agreed that something was wrong. He then apologized and asked us if we wanted anything else. We said no – that we were plenty full anyhow. And he comped off the shrimp from our bill. Our waitress then came over and apologized too for the shrimp.

Our waitress and the manager were both helpful and courteous. It really impressed me. It was refreshing to experience.

Maybe we will try and make it back there sooner then 6 more months.
